Case Study

Kingsmoor Depot

Client

Direct Rail Services (DRS)

Tasked with delivering a CET system, train wash, CET retention tank and toilet facilities, GBR-Rail assembled its full range of expertise to deliver a ‘one stop’ turnkey solution for DRS Kingmoor depot, Carlisle.

This not only involved mechanical and electrical (M&E) installations and civil works, but also the design, supply and maintenance aspects of the various contracts.

First, GBR-Rail designed and installed a bespoke manual CET system with four Servicing Module Points (SMPs) stationed on a central servicing apron. Each SMP has effluent suction, rinse water and tanking water facilities, with the suction and water delivery pumps and main control panel housed in a specially designed plant room.

GBR-Rail applied its civil works and M&E design expertise to deliver a tailor-made train wash system.

This featured a 6-rotor ‘flail type’ machine, purpose designed for cleaning the bodysides of locomotives and Mark 2 coaches using detergent chemicals. This also included a new plant room, associated pumping equipment, tanks and controls, plus the provision of incoming electrical supply and water to the new plant room housing.

At the same time, GBR-Rail designed, fabricated and assembled CET toilet tanks in their Derby factory, and provided Stainless Steel toilets and controls to the MK11 coaches on-site. Installation of the Stainless-steel toilet, retention tank and control system was carried out by GBR-Rail engineers at the customer’s site.

Neil White, project manager at DRS, said: “What impressed us was GBR-Rail’s combined capabilities, meaning they could deliver on every aspect of our requirements….”
